Day 11 Hawes - Keld 13 miles 7 hours (including a break in the Kearton Country Tea Room)
Glorious day. Refreshed from resting in Hawes we were set for the second leg of Pounding the Pennines. As we bid farewell to Janie and Stewart at the lovely Ebor House, the sun started to shine over the Yorkshire Dales. We started off through the meadows and continued up the 5 mile slog up to the formidable summit of Great Shunner Fell (716 metres). As per the previous 10 walking days the ground was, at times, very boggy, we were forced to refill our boots with muddy bog water so soon after they had dried out. The views however were a welcome distraction to wet (soon to be webbed) feet.
Both feeling a little tried on account of team Smith colds, the beautiful village of Thwaite offered a fabulous place for a drink and respite. We stopped at a very friendly hotel for a short break before completing our trip into Keld.
The sun beat down on the panoramic valleys of Swaledale as we completed our final climb into Kindson Hill. At the risk of sounding repetitive the views were truely outstanding.
We called Glenda from the red phone box in Keld for our lift up to Proir House. Big feed, bath and beds..all very exciting.
