The wettest June on record offers some rather unsavoury walking conditions! We're working on the theory that we're having 4 months rain in 2 to allow for 21 days of blistering sunshine from 24 August. Bring on the Indian Summer!!
Sunday 24 June Hayfield - 8 miles
We had to take an alternative route than the one we planned on account of my bad knee playing up and the weather. Highlight of the walk was Dad's random snack offering of boiled egg. Dad, hot off the heels from his Scotlish nature trip, gave me a lesson in birds native to the Shetlands..supported by iPhone app with bird sounds.
Sunday 1 July - Pennine Way linear from junction 22 on the M60 Ripponden Moors - 10 miles
When your walk starts with the conversation "do you think it's safe?" you know you are on to a winner. After a good ten minute debate on whether to even get out of the car..dad 'tested' the conditions by stepping out into the gale force winds and torrential rain then soon darted back into the car. Deciding we were Smiths with Shetland heritage..even the grim outlook on the moors shouldn't stop us. The views extended to 4 inches in front thanks to the heavy fog but even if we could see, I fear this is going to be a very uninspiring stretch of walk! My new waterproof trousers became a victim of my appalling sense of coordination, falling A over T and tearing the knee - the 'good news' is I didn't land on my bad knee..but I have a lovely purple graze to remember the day by....also now need to do some waterproof patch work grrrr. That said, a bit more Peninne Way education under our belts can be no bad thing..less than 8 weeks to go!
