Jubilee hiking

Nearly two months after the knee disaster post Skiddaw, it was time to test the physio and hit the hills again. The bank holiday gave us the opportunity to do some consecutive days training pre-the big one. As you would expect for a June bank holiday the weather was rather wet and extremely blustery on the top of the moors. Nothing the Gore-Tex couldn't handle added with a bit of Smith determination! We trundled off to Fairhomes, Ladybower reservoir, Alport castles, Blackley Moors and back through an extremely slippy plantation where dad gave me a lesson in cross country skiing. It didn't help that this gave me terrible fits of giggles and on many occasions nearly landed me face first at the bottom of the hill. A good yet challenging day putting 15 miles on the clock..best of all knee held up.

Dad has a theory that he spends 50% of his life doing himself good and 50% doing himself damage. So after 7 hours strenuous hiking it was only right that we got a wee bit over excited about the days achievement and overindulged on curry and wine until past our bed time. This is, of course, Bear Grylls text book preparation for hike day two. Monday was a trip over to beautiful Edale for what was referred to in the book as "a gentle scramble" up Grinsbrook Clough to Kinder Plateau over to Noe Stool, Pym Chair and back down via Jacobs ladder. As you can see from the photograph, the author's description of a "gentle scramble" was referring to mountain goats, as this 3 mile climb left us clinging onto rocks whilst navigating the oncoming waterfall. Another tough but rewarding day and the sun even came out of an hour of two!
